A Season of Thanksgiving

As we celebrate the season of Thanksgiving
we can turn to our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.

We have great news to report on Grandpa's health.
His four month followup at the Doctor resulted in a very low psa count of .9.
And the new bone scans show that all the tumors are shrinking in size.
The Doctor said Grandpa "could live another 3 to 10 years."
Grandpa knows these blessings come from the prayers offered by all of you.

Grandpa spends his days keeping up on news,
watching political debates,
reading books and studying scriptures while he sits by Grandma's side.
And if you look close you can see who he can skype with,
enjoying the technology that allows him to talk around the world.
He is learning to use his ipad and enjoys reading your blogs.

We are thankful that Grandpa can be by Grandma's side day and night.
She will still reach over in bed each night and hold his hand.

Grandma spends much of the day now in bed,
just up to eat then back to bed so that she is more comfortable.
She only nibbles a little.
The Nurse said that anyone else in her position with as little food, drink, and length of time of disease that it is a miracle that she is still here with us.
She has such a strong will to keep living.
I wonder if she is holding on thinking she is taking care of Grandpa.
She enjoys the visits from children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

When I ask Grandma to always remember I love her she nods her head.
Yesterday she enjoyed listening to Jimae and to Dan on the phone,
holding it to her ear to keep hearing them talk.
Grandpa got a smile this morning.
And on Thanksgiving she was still motioning me
when she was worried about little Milo as he crawled across the floor.

We are grateful for the great love they have for each other and for each of us.
Grandpa and Grandma love each of you and wish you a joyous holiday season.

Grandma's journal, December 1978

The other night I was looking for something in the "A Beautiful Day" book, and I came across this journal entry from Grandma on p. 268, her mother had just passed away and she was reflecting on her memories of her life:

"I remember one scene I will never forget. She was about 88 and was staying with us in our big house on 17th East. She was upset because I was going to bed at midnight and leaving dirty dishes in the sink. She knows I can only take a few corrections in one day. She quietly went to the sink and washed them. I was chagrined and I picked up a towel and dried them.

Sometimes I remember that and it gives me the incentive to get my dishes done, no matter how late it is. I can see her, her hair white and wrinkles lining her face, quietly doing my dishes at midnight.

I do want to be a good housekeeper, so she can be proud of me, wherever she is; but there are so many marvelous things in the world to do, to learn, so many people to do things for and with, especially my own family. But I try to remember 'cleanliness is next to Godliness.' I am thankful for my mother."

This makes me think of all the different women we have in this family. Those who love to keep a clean house and even do their dishes at midnight--(oh Grandma Brown might be disappointed in me?!) and those of us who struggle to keep up on all the housework.
Those of us whose talents are more like Grandma Bodell's, the serving, the learning, the reaching out to the lonely. I know that Heavenly Father is pleased with both of these women and the lives they led...and I know he is pleased with our progress as well-as long as we just keep trying.
These are thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head since I read Grandma's journal entry. I am grateful to each of you and examples you are to me. Here a two quotes that I found that kind of go along with all of this. I'd love to hear what you think.

Help wanted...

Hi all,
Brighton is getting baptized next week and we have done lots of neat things getting ready this year. I was wondering... I am putting together a baptism book for him, and I want to include family members testimonies. I think it would give him a fun "link" to his family to be able to read aunts, uncles and cousins testimonies... Short, long, sweet, sad... Please, would you write a thought or two down for me and post it on here. Age does not matter. I would love little kids plus great aunties!

Besides, how much will Grandpa Bodell LOVE getting to read 100 plus of his descendants testimonies!

I love you all!

Sending our love on Valentine's Day

Grandpa and Grandma send their love to you this Valentine's Day.
Stop by for a visit this week and sign a heart. (There are two doors of hearts to fill.)

And if you ever want to know what treat you can pick up for Grandpa on your way to visit them, a two piece original from KFC is really "so good you can eat the bone", along side an A&W Root Beer shake was "the best Valentine's Day treat he's had in years."

We are glad you came to our house to live! We love you.

Happy 68th Wedding Anniversary!

Grandpa and Grandma celebrated their 68th Wedding Anniversary on Wednesday January 26th.

It may not have been celebrated with candlelight dinner and fine gifts,
but the eternal love that they have for each other shows
in the small glances,
the loving care,
the sweet kisses,
and the reaching out to one another in the night to hold hands.

Grandma enjoyed the visit and well wishes from her youngest great-grandson, Brigham.
